Nemo's World: Goodbye, Liberty and Justice; Hello, Fascist Police State

The following news items were located among today's headlines alone.

ACLU Sues Pentagon Over Anti-War Group Monitoring

The American Civil Liberties Union sued the US Defense Department on Wednesday to demand information it says the government has collected on groups opposed to the war in Iraq. ==== The group says the Pentagon has been monitoring anti-war groups and individuals and has compiled lists on people it sees as potential threats but who the ACLU says are exercising their free-speech rights. ...

Officials Sued Over Phone Records Access

The federal government sued the New Jersey attorney general and other state officials Wednesday to stop them from seeking information about telephone companies' cooperation with the National Security Agency. ==== The unusual filing in U.S. District Court in Trenton, N.J., is the latest effort by federal authorities to halt legal proceedings aimed at revealing whether and how often AT&T, Verizon and other phone companies have provided customer records to the NSA without a court order. ...

Judge Rules That US Has Broad Powers to Detain Noncitizens Indefinitely

A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled yesterday that the government has wide latitude under immigration law to detain noncitizens on the basis of religion, race or national origin, and to hold them indefinitely without explanation. ...

High Court Backs Police No-Knock Searches

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that police armed with a warrant can barge into homes and seize evidence even if they don't knock, a huge government victory that was decided by President Bush's new justices. ...

If you value your "freedom", I'm afraid you'll have to seek it elsewhere. What was once America has finally been totally perverted, reduced to the status of "DINO" -- a "DEMOCRACY In Name Only", that is. Our actual form of government is clearly an installed one-party dictatorship, thoroughly dominated by vile authoritarian extremists who are themselves flagrantly lawless.

"Step out of line,
The Man comes and takes you away."

~ Buffalo Springfield

And now they won't even bother to knock.

"Judge Rules That US Has Broad Powers to Detain Noncitizens Indefinitely"

I am SO glad that I am no longer working in the US. I don't even feel safe living on the same planet. They can go to any country and grab us for no reason.

I'm not sure how many of you are into the band Ministry, but I am listening to their latest CD now - Rio Grande Blood - and the lyrics are great.

Lies Lies Lies Lies

America has been hijacked
Not by Al Qaeda, not by Bin Laden
But by a group of tyrants
That should be of great concern to all Americans

If you value your "freedom"

then that's exactly what you want! That's a perfect proof how seriously the American Government takes the idea of democracy as "equal rights for everbody" - and if you don't knock when you intrude into Iraqi homes, you shouldn't have to knock, if you intrude in American homes

except (for sure) for the palaces of the ones, more equal than others...

but because you can easily see the difference between a house and a palace, the "more equal" never have to worry to be mistaken with the common "free equals"...

(note aside: can anybody please explain me, why we educate our children through schools and Discovery Channel, when nobody wants to learn from history?)

Yeah. That was me. I'm starting to censor myself for your protection.

Twist up a toque, uncork a bottle, spark that smoke, and let it fly, Robert!

But don't ask me to celebrate your freedom while I'm still in chains.

but may i ask you to explain your words - because, sorry, i don't understand you here - or is it concerned with barnitas post?

you've got to delete my previous comment

just by accident, i guess, barnita...

back to topic:

please excuse my permanent ponderings about history - but until today we (in Germany), despite all knowledge about development and results of misbehaving justice, couldn't solve the problem of "form of law" vs. "function of law" - because our western system of jurisdiction depends on the words of lawmakers and/or judges, you can't impeach a judge ruling according to law (most Nazi-judges weren't punished because of that!). We urgently NEED the ancient principle of justice back in jurisdiction - how complex and difficult it might be to realize - to "normalize" the words of law to the basic reason for having laws: the protection of the survivability of society as guarantee for the survivability of the individual - that's the simple reason for "equal rights for everybody, either weak or strong, either poor or rich, either black or white, either woman or man"...

not just idealism...

My sincerest and most humble apologies. I was having a super duper shit of a day.

It seems you are always the one to catch hell when I'm in bad mood.

I'm very, very sorry.

I'm quite the fan of better living through chemicals. Nothing is more relaxing at the end of the day, when all of your business is taken care of, than smoking a bit of nature's bounty. However, my wife has seen fit to use this against me in the ongoing battle I'm fighting to be a parent to my son.

Also my job has some incredibly sneaky ways of deciding who is and is not using "illegal substances" so I'm caught both ways.

It's perfectly fine to go out and get drunk every night on state- approved alcohol, but smoke one joint and you are a criminal.

So I'm a bit pissed off at the hypocrisy of it all and I snapped at poor ML for no good reason.

Very sorry to hear your openness to the creator's botanical gifts are causing you such troubles. I forget not every state in the land of the "free" has the benefits of California's Proposition 215. Hopefully someday this country can move beyond its prudishness.

My comment, of course, was intended as tongue-in-cheek encouragement.

I know, ML. I was just prickly.

Nemo's post was, as usual, wonderful and frighteningly informative. We seem to be on the same wavelength. I can't tell you how many times Springfield's "For What It's Worth" has run through my head these past few years. I've even managed to dig up a copy of Public Ememy's cover that Stephen Stills did a guest shot on.

The disconnect between what's happening and what is portrayed in the media as happening is as frightening as always.

Everyone keeps saying that the elections in November will tell the tale of where our republic is heading. I said the same thing in '04 about those elections and look how that's turned out. Yes, the tale has been told. Our republic is dying if not already dead. What we have now are the last gasps. We can bitch about it all we want to, but there doesn't seem to be one damn thing we can do about it.

But hey! Cheer up! It's not everyday you get to watch an empire implode.

Have to look for that silver lining.

A nice look at exactly WHY we have civil liberties to protect us from the state's abuses:

The Human Cost of No-Knock Raids

And here's to the empire imploding: I raise my tankard to toast the many millions of victims of the U.S. of Atrocities.

Thanks ML. I had a a much needed laugh at the "You know you're a drunkard when...."

I may have to post some of those here. They were classic.

Regarding no-knock searches, if summoned to jury duty, I will categorically NOT convict anyone who uses lethal force against unannounced intruders, police or not.

I'm VERY late to the party with this one, but did someone mention "drugs"? ;-) In my recent, lethargic efforts to wander "through the past darkly", I came across the following superb interview with Alfred McCoy from May of 2003. (If the name sounds familiar, Professor McCoy is the man who wrote THE book on the subject, The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade, currently in its Third Edition.) ==== The article itself is fairly long but intensely informative, relentlessly intriguing, and HEAVILY addictive (pun fully intended). And it concludes with some remarkably savvy comments from McCoy on the "wisdom" (or more accurately, LACK thereof) of the "War on Drugs" as currently prosecuted in the United States: Tricks of the Trade: Alfred McCoy On How The CIA Got Involved In Global Drug Trafficking.
