Drugs

________________________

There's a cop in my rearview mirror.

She turns into my apartment complex right behind me.

Quick inventory...license...registration is in the dash....an old insurance receipt...

I'm not holding....clean....I'm good.

She cruises by without a glance and stops in front of the building. Kind of a let down. What's the point of being a good citizen, if you can't flaunt it for the Man?

The maintenance man stands on the second floor outside his apartment. His sunken eyes meet mine as I climb out of my car. I look at the cruiser and back at him, he shrugs.

I'm reaching in for the groceries when a second patrol car eases around the corner and pulls up behind the first.

This is getting interesting.

The cops exit their vehicles in that disdainful cop way that I'm sure they teach at the academy. Bored and in charge. Heads are starting to appear at windows. I'm betting toilets are flushing as well.

Cops.

She's short but looks like she could wrestle an elephant with little effort and he's very tall with a very regulation mustache. He's ready for someone to try some shit.

I really regret that I don't get to show them my incredibly legal status. It would be so...affirming.

I'm carrying my bags to the stairs and thinking: domestic violence.... gotta be

They're on the second landing and she's asking John, the maintenance guy, loudly, "Who lives here" gesturing at one of the battered doors.

Voldermort....I think, but don't say.

John shrugs. I try not to laugh. He's fighting throat cancer and doesn't give much of a damn these days, he knows who lives in his building.

They're knocking on the door. I've reached mine and suddenly want to be inside and away from this. I don't want to see the kids behind that door seeing daddy hauled away....

Next door to the guilty apartment, the door opens. The semi-retired stripper leans out.

"They aint there."

Stocky-woman-cop isn't happy.

"Where are they?"

Paris... I think to myself

"They went to wash clothes" she said defensively, as if this was her fault.

Key in lock. Open door. I'm in here and whatever the hell that is, is out there.

Later...

John's sitting outside his apartment, smoking. I walk down and we talk for a minute and ask what was with the visit from law enforcement.

"Ahhh... somethin' about meth. One was accusin' another about somethin havin' to do with drugs. Stupid to get mixed up in shit like that."

He laughed and blew smoke into the warm summer night.

I'm so pissed. I'm so pissed. My blog's a traitor - I can't see nuts on it. See- I keep telling you that we Indians have more reason to go kill terrorists and extremists - but noooooooooo -your fucked up country decides to go fuck an entire country after 1 single measly peice of shit 9/11 which had nothing to even do with Iraq- We on the other hand, go through this shit every year -literally - there was the Mulund blast last year and the Ghatkopar explosions on the central line, last year and the regular temple blasts. And - there are too many to remember. My PM will get on TV tonight and make a teary eyed speech about the dear beloved dead - and there will be no further action taken. None. Zilch. We'll just feel hurt that someone tried to fuck our western lines - but we won't hold anyone accountable. We'll continue trying to talk things out with Musharraf and Hurrayat and LeT - but no action. nothing. I hate you smug Americans whose measly deaths can fuck up a country on the other side of the globe. We don't deserve any retribution. Or security. Mumbai People are so used to disasters they just get up and deal with the issue at hand and go back to work tomorrow. I'm mad and I'm so full of hate right now.

Thats 7 blasts in a day.

STILL we continue to pursue (and even expand) this utterly failed, Constitutionally dubious, counter-productive campaign of heavy-handed oppression, in the process arbitarily "criminalizing" MILLIONS of Americans for merely exercising their prerogative to make strictly personal choices. Otherwise upstanding citizens are forced to "look over their shoulder" in fear of being prosecuted and imprisoned for typically VICTIMLESS crimes! (And of course the economically disadvantaged, as always, suffer disproportionately, while US intelligence agencies are given carte blanche to disregard those statutes at whim.) Could any nation choose a path more blatantly Totalitarian and senseless to "address" a relatively *innocuous* problem -- one more properly within the domain of public health?: Against Drug Prohibition [ACLU; 1/6/1995] More and more ordinary people, elected officials, newspaper columnists, economists, doctors, judges and even the Surgeon General of the United States are concluding that the effects of our drug control policy are at least as harmful as the effects of drugs themselves. ... ==== Drug Prohibition Has Failed, by David Boaz [CATO Institute; March 3, 1997] ==== Rethinking the futile War on Drugs, by John McAlister [The Free Press; July 29, 2000] ==== Tricks of the Trade: Alfred McCoy On How The CIA Got Involved In Global Drug Trafficking [The Sun; May, 2003]

My thoughts are with you and your country, Barnita. So sorry to hear of these awful bombings.

"... your fucked up country decides to go fuck an entire country after 1 single measly peice of shit 9/11 which had nothing to even do with Iraq" ==== Barnita: Nor did those 9/11 attacks demonstrably have anything to do with *Afghanistan*, nor even the alleged "mastermind" so conveniently utilized to seal the fate of *that* blameless, sovereign nation: FBI says, "No hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11". The people of this country have been "played for suckers" from the very *start* by this vicious, insidious gang of NeoConNazi mobsters we refer to as a "presidential administration". ==== So sorry to hear of these new outbreaks of violence in India. But "hopefully", you can take some, admittedly *faint*, comfort in the conviction that your own *government* was likely NOT covertly responsible for the attacks. That's an illusion we Americans can no longer entertain regarding 9/11, as the evidence of astoundingly treacherous, duplicitious machinations by US officials -- whose *only* apparent goal was to facilitate these convenient, aggressive "wars of choice" -- grows clearer by the day.

I'm glad this time I can take comfort in that this time, but remember Godhra and its aftermath? The state of Gujrat was responsible for that, and the Center watched very quietly.

But still- the AMerican case is absolutely something else.

And I'm sorry - I was so heated up - I was very rude- I didn't mean "your fucked up country", that would be nasty of me. What I really meant was "your fucked up government". Or presidential administration, as you prefer. :)

I didn't think it rude at all. My country is fucked up. Hell, fucked up doesn't even begin to cover it.

I think "country" covers it. And I can explain why very simply.

November 2004.

Either the election was stolen, millions of vote Diebolded, millions of others "kept off the rolls". And no one cared, even the opposition "candiddate", enough to raise an alarm. Hello! Fucking exit polls!

OR

This country re-elected George Duuuuhbya as president. Voluntarily.

The case for fuckedupedness can be proven by that incident alone.

Barni, I'm so glad you are OK. I didn't get word on the bombings until this afternoon.

I thought...Bombings in India?...

What part?

Mumbai. Shit.

Very worried, my dear. You take care.

Barnita: Apologies *totally* unnecessary. Your point was quite well founded, and I'm compelled to second ("third"?) the conviction that this country is indeed utterly fucked up, as already expressed by ML and Robert. (It's not our *personal* doing, but still ...). ==== I too was extremely glad to hear you're okay (as well as disturbed by this new wave of senseless violence). You see, we, as a whole, are awfully fond of you. :-)

Let's not forget the 2000 election theft:

Gore Wins 6 of 9 Recount Scenarios

(Including the one the FL supreme court ordered tallied.)

But who would notice such a thing when the country was busy watching the Twin Towers of Eichmann implode for the hundredth time?

Thanks you guys for caring. I'm at work. So is everyone else I know - as promised- Mumabi lived up to its image - the struggling, resiliant city. We have begun the process of forgetting and we have started life as usual. Until - the next attack - Salam Mumbai - as the Newsies say.
