Farmers in the Field

They're not wasting any time

A friend of mine asked me today "You don't actually think that the government is going to start throwing Americans in prison idefinitely without trial, do you?"

I'm constantly amazed at the ability my fellow Americans have for not being able to understand that we are not special. We are not exempt from history. Just because you want to close your eyes and pretend it's not happening or prefer to simply not think about it, won't stop what's coming. The only thing, the one and only thing that protects the American people from tyranny is the Constitution of the United States. Not the good will of the government. Not God. Not wishes or hopes.

Only the document that President Bush had referred to as "Just goddamned piece of paper."

If you listen to various mainstream news sources they will tell you that this law doesn't apply to Americans.

They are either unforgivably stupid or they are simply lying. Or a mixture of both.

From the Military Commissions Act of 2006:

"Any person is punishable as a principal under this chapter who commits an offense punishable by this chapter, or aids, abets, counsels, commands, or procures its commission,"

Another provision of the law states that "any person subject to this chapter who, in breach of an allegiance or duty to the United States, knowingly and intentionally aids an enemy of the United States, or one of the co-belligerents of the enemy [presumably U.S. military allies, such as Great Britain and Israel], shall be punished as a military commission ... may direct."(emphasis mine)

Anybody want to explain to me how a non-citizen could be "in breach of allegiance or duty to the United States"?

I also love how you are now considered an enemy combatant if you help groups that may be hostile to Israel.

Do I think that the government will begin wholesale roundups ofU.S. citizens today?

But how about if there's another large scale "terrorist attack" on the United States?

How long after something like that do you think people who openly speak out against the government will be deemed to be "providing support for the enemy."

This descent is upon us. I never wanted to believe it. I kept thinking that somewhere, somehow, something would put a stop to this runaway train. But it's too late.

All that's left is follow this nightmare to it's logical conclusion.

"Each step was so small, so inconsequential, so well explained or, on occasion, 'regretted,' that unless one understood what the whole thing was in principle, what all these 'little measures'. . . must some day lead to, one no more saw it developing from day to day than a farmer in his field sees the corn growing. . . . Each act. . . is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join you in resisting somehow."-- Milton Mayer, They Thought They Were Free. The Germans: 1938-1945.

I am kind of sad and disheartened and here is why. Even before understanding History, universal reason starts with ones own eyes first, connected with reality (you) unlike propaganda (usually the media) through democratic system. But the democratic system has been broken, it is only about money, and media only cares to convince us to expand their foreign policy. Nowadays it would seem that the media wants to be our own eyes and ignoring their crimes abroad, that was the 1st step, and Americans who are not agree with the policies of the american empire.

Americans were one time special, when they were able to change things, it is not the case anymore since the 50s but Americans love living in their past to forget about the collapse of their own dream when it is confronted with harsch reality. It is time to change things since the radical government of the Bush administration would like to put our heart and mind between four walls.

We got 2 wars, one in Iraq, and one in Afghanistan. They failed in Iraq, and they failed in Afghanistan, because we empoverished those countries, since we don't care about humanitarian aid, we only care about ourselves first. At the way it is going, people are so pissed off that they do not care anymore about humanitarian aid. Please go attack Iran, since it is stuck between Iraq and Afghanistan, and I promise you that Bush the retard is going to collapse the West.

This is why this President needs to be kicked out from power during the next elections, before we get killed by other nations, abroad or on our land.

Blame it on ignorance, and blame it on arrogance too. Arrogance and ignorance are 2 intertwened concrete words.

Not fear, nor tears can reach me now
the light seems so clear as the night fades away
Behold of thy flame, below of all shame
Come conquer me sweet dreams of paradise
Dusk drawn hither to my evening star
A glance in thy mirror
The trance of thy mirror
Venus... through the looking glass
Dance so frail and lost in the fields afar
Cast off thy mourning
Clasp life and glory
Venus... through the looking glass
The sense of angels in veils of dawn
Like she runs forever among thy halls
The pale horizons are closing down
The reasons for living are lost somehow
Cross my heart with a glance upon the star of riddance
Drift afar like teardrops on the Stygian River

I'm the nightfall and wizard that summon thee
You're the blizzard that drape my eyes
I'm thy sorrow and vein of obscurity
You're the dagger that cuts

Shivers on the bleak horizon
Profound words... you're my frailty

See the light cease in thy life
Profound words... hurting me

Robert: I recognized your "summation" quote immediately, and it's uncannily appropriate to our own national dilemma. You've hit the nail squarely (and brilliantly) via that broadside from the past. ==== Denial, on the other hand, is an enormously powerful rationalization, exceedingly useful to those who would willingly exploit its prevalence among the "governed" to their own ends. (If I had a dollar for every time I've heard the retort, "Oh, they wouldn't do THAT!", I'd be very wealthy indeed.) Moreover, I think a great many essentially "good" people have no genuine conception of how evil operates. Much as Adolf Hitler cynically described "the Big Lie" in Mein Kampf, most individuals -- unpracticed in such willful treachery themselves -- cannot fathom its deliberate employment by others. ==== But this foul "law" speaks for itself, in terms SO ambiguous that its abuse potential cannot be dimissed. It in fact seems steeped in vagueness by DESIGN, for exactly that purpose -- to be abused. Amerika, through its "elected representatives", has formally acquiesced to Totalitarian domination, in an era of relative *security* with NO visible threat to justify any such draconian measure. Our politicians have manifested the height of paranoia or the depth of corruption, or both. It is now "illegal" to oppose evil, provided that evil is officially sanctioned by the government. As for me, "Make mine sedition!"

sorry to be so late, Robert...

but i am pondering on and on about your post - i feel like i am dreaming, as if i would watch the progress of events from outer space

it was the Military Commissions Act, i guess (btw: thanks for the quotes, i didn't have studied the whole law and didn't find that horrible paragraphs), but what i found was horrible enough to prove: it is happening again

it is happening again - democracy is killed once again and with democracy respect for nature is dying, again, and respect for others, for neighbors and friends and allies and peace and well-being and science and intelligence and its smooth, weakly looking tools. Just "think positive" remains, all that "winner"-gebrabbel so eagerly ignoring information which isn't convenient - but that "strategy" is only acceptable as long as defeat is an option - when it is about human future, defeat is simply NO option and we would need every little bit of information, every little bit of intelligence to survive.

Stupidity kills, intelligence saves - the lesson of homo sapiens sapiens while Neandertal is dead, while austrolophitecus robustus is dead

but i guess the truth is too harsh for the people, they want to be comforted, to be encouraged, to be lulled into a sense of security, to think positive - oh, it isn't just that bad, yes, something to worry about, but not really dangerous, nothing which couldn't be mastered and controlled

i remember the Twin Towers as i looked at the smoke and i had this feeling of darkness i had never before, that now doomsday would come - and then i thought, what a crap! The world can't be destroyed in a moment, it will not be that bad, maybe some loss of money, maybe some more trouble, but nothing really serious. I didn't want to think that there is no future, it was simply that - because it was me telling everyone through the last years of the 1990s, that the Law of the Strongest doesn't work in a complex world and so i should have known that the world can't be destroyed in a moment, but quite easily in a decade...

as you've said:
I never wanted to believe it. I kept thinking that somewhere, somehow, something would put a stop to this runaway train.

i did analyze it, i did know it, but i didn't want to "believe" it, preferred the thinking, "that somewhere, somehow, something would put a stop to this runaway train"

but now even Bliar says, we only have about 15 years time to survive Global Warming - and the Superpower, the one maybe (only maybe!) strong enough to initialize the rescue of our environment - doesn't care, just cares about grabbing the last resources, as if there would be a Deus Ex Machina, creating some new - just cares about preparing for Star Wars to kill other humans from above their heads - while drawing the reins tighter over the own citizens, so that no one will be able to stop them

oh yes, that may sound fatalistic to american ears, but when defeat is not an option the first thing you have to do: collect information - and collect as much as you can to be able to reproduce the current danger as correct as you can, even when you don't like the information, even when the information tells you: "you'll lose", even when you don't see any way to win, even when you even can't imagine how it should be possible to win - first step is always: start to collect information and never close your eyes, only because you prefer to "think positive" - you cannot do everything and you cannot win every fight, you have to accept reality, because reality always wins. Look at Bush - his parents are so rich, but he is just an imbecile. You can't buy physics, only the physicists, you can't ignore evolution without being punished...

but sometimes reality is on your side and helps you, sometimes you are the little mouse facing the fangs of a gigantic cat and while others die of resignation and others die of hyperactivity, you keep a cool head and wait for the one single chance in the one single moment when it comes - as long as you can stand it and are intelligent enough to see and use it, so that you are the one little mouse, able to survive a supermonster

alas, most people don't want to accept the danger, accept it, that the good years are gone and that is mainly their own fault, because if you don't care about future, you'll risk it and while i look at them and think, how it is possible to close your eyes facing such a danger - just saying "oh, i can't change it anyway, so i think positive and hope, it will be all fine and enjoy my life as long as i can" - instead of clutching at every straw

i feel like Major Tom (german version, because for me the english version is not appropriate)
Völlig losgelöst von der Erde
Schwebt das Raumschiff schwerelos

Released from Earth
the Starship floats free from weight
